Food Galore: Ribeye Steak Dinner

I enjoy going out to eat, but it adds up quickly. Eating out can also be unhealthy. Once in a while, we treat ourselves to a nice home-cooked steak dinner. We get our steak from Costo because they have affordable quality steak. Our favorite is New York Ribeye ($30 for four pieces). It's thick, juicy, and tender! I pan seared it on medium-high heat until it is 60% cooked before turning off the heat and let the steak sit in the pan. I made steamed broccoli and home-fries for sides. The total cook time only took about 35 minutes! I always try to cook at home because it saves us money and the ingredients I use are healthy. It's a great way to stay in shape for the summer.

Caramelized onion over New York Ribeye in medium rare with a side of steamed broccoli and home-fries.

The other day, I made a quick spaghetti lunch. I like to add my own mix into the sauce to make it more hearty. I used Organic Ragu Pasta Sauce and threw in ground turkey with chopped garlic. Obviously, I can't go without eating vegetables, so I sauteed kale with olive oil. Lastly, I warmed up some Butternut Squash soup from Trader's Joe to finish off the meal. This also took about 35 minutes.

Minced half a garlic and sauteed until fragrant. Cook ground turkey with garlic until 70% done. Then, add in pasta sauce of choice and bring it to a boil.

Sauteed minced garlic until fragrant and throw in kale leaves. Stir occasionally until soft. Add a quarter cup of water and cover it until you see steam. Turn off heat and let it sit.

Pasta lunch for two. Johnsonville Sausage spaghetti with ground turkey garlic tomato sauce. Accompanied by a side of olive oil sauteed kale and butternut squash soup.

Happy cooking!

Treasure Finds: Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, & Lancome

Who doesn't love a good deal, right? I get especially excited on discounted high-end cosmetics! I always enjoyed shopping at The Jersey Shore Premium Outlet, but recently, I found two stores that I am crazy about. It is The Cosmetic Company Store and Lancome-Designer Fragrances & Cosmetics Co. Most of us know 'The Cosmetic Company Store' as the "CCO". For those of you who don't know what the "CCO" is, it's time to get excited! The CCO is a cosmetic store that carries discontinued or limited edition products from different companies at a discounted price. Each CCO has different stock depending on what is shipped to them. These companies include Mac, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Clinique, Smashbox, and more. I will go back in a few months to see what other goodies are there!

Lancome palette, Bobbi Brown Corrector, Estee Lauder Concealer

I picked up the limited edition palette in Golden Frenzy at the Lancome store. Apparently, this palette is what Kim Kardashian wore on her wedding day. I could care less about Kim Kardashian, but this palette is gorgeous! All the colors are wearable and blends effortlessly.

(Retails for $49, I got it for $15!)

The crease color is the middle swatch and is cooler in real life. I like how it creates a natural shadow in my non-existent crease.

(Natural Sunlight)

The black shadow is surprisingly pigmented. It is the darkest black I own and makes a beautiful eye liner.

Left: Estee Lauder Smoothing Concealer in Medium
(Retails for $22, got it for $15.50)

Right: Bobbi Brown Corrector in Bisque
(Retails for $23, got it for $16.25)

Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Taupe
(Retails for $21, got it for $14.95)

Very smooth and velvety. Satin finish.

(Natural Sunlight)

Great color for all over the lid or crease color for a smokey eye.

Home Edition: Indoor Playground

I've been wanting to rearrange our living room in a way where the girls get to play freely without touching the TV area. They used to tug on the wires, turn the TV on/off, open the cabinet, and grab decorations off the side tables. I cannot express how happy I am that we finally did this! I am  extremely satisfied with the way their "play area" incorporates with our living room! Our apartment looks like a play room...

The Indoor Playground!

Miss Ladybug greets you at the entry way

The Lounge Area

The Movie Area

I was on a roll today and fixed up their bedroom too! Now, they have two rooms they can play in! Covering the floor with puzzle pieces took time, but it is well worth it!

The Bunny Den

I like how the girls' room is so colorful. The entire floor is covered with puzzle pieces. It screams "energy"!

I love how we moved the massage chair into the girls' room. It makes the living room less cramped and lets me relax while they roam free in their room! We made the hand-print canvas on the left when the girls were around 6 months. I bought them from zulily.com, but you can purchase them from Pearhead themselves. One of my favorite thing in this room is tree decal. It gives the room a relaxing feel and calms me down right away. You can purchase the tree decal here.

Again, I like these wall decals because it helps calm me down. The cute trees and animals are prefect for this room. The light switch cover is a rose design and the name plaques were given to me from a sorority sister. The wall decorations add a nice touch to our temporary home.

Until next time!

First Impression of Rachel K. CC Cream

The Difference between BB Creams and CC Creams:

CC Creams is an improved version of BB Creams. It is the next "big thing" in the beauty industry, but it is only available in Asia at the moment. CC Creams offers the same benefits as BB Creams including moisturizing, whitening, skin repairing, and sun protection. Except CC Creams includes ingredients that rejuvenate your skin quicker. Read more about it here.

About Rachel K. CC Cream:

In 2009, Rachel K. won Miss Singapore Universe and began her journey to create a new beauty innovation. After two years of research in cosmetic laboratories in Japan, Korean, and USA, along with the help of lead dermatologists, cosmetologists, and make-up artists, the Rachel K. CC Cream was born. Rachel K. CC Cream is a 10-in-1 non-comedogenic waterproof product with SPF 35 that controls shine, instantly brightens, evens skin tone, conceal flaws, and hydrates your skin for 24 hours.

My First Impression:

I have used BB Creams before and I was not super impressed. I bought Mischa BB Cream about two years ago because my Korean friend recommended it to me. First of all, this was before BB Creams were available in the U.S. market, so most of the color selection is fairly light. I had darker skin tone before and most BB Creams were not available in my tan complexion. I finally found a BB Cream that is significantly darker than most BB Creams and bought it. When I first put it on, it felt greasy. I gave it a few minutes to let it settle into my skin and it felt better. The problem was, it didn't seem completely dry, I had to powder it down with a setting powder to give it a satin finish. Secondly, I have combination skin, but my skin would get shiny within a couple of hours. Since the Mischa BB Cream did not have a satin finish, it made me look even more oily than usual. Lastly, I was the least impressed with the longevity of the Mischa BB Cream. This BB Cream transferred like no other product I've tried! I would touch my skin slightly and it would appear on my fingers. I was disappointed that the Mischa BB Cream did not work for me because it gets such great reviews.

Yesterday, I received my CC Cream in the mail and I couldn't wait to try it! I put it on today and it felt so different than the Mischa BB Cream. First off, the CC Cream felt feather light when I applied it onto my skin. It did not feel like I was wearing make-up, it felt like I just put a serum on. Secondly, this CC Cream surprisingly gave a decent amount of coverage. Most BB Creams and Tinted Moisturizers provide little to no coverage, but this CC Cream stepped up it's game. I would say the coverage is about a light to medium coverage which you can build on. However, I wouldn't depend on the CC Cream to act as your main source for coverage if you want to achieve a medium to full coverage. I would lightly dust your foundation powder over the CC Cream to get the coverage you need to avoid cakey-ness. Last but not least, the color 'Neutral' matched my skin tone completely. The way Rachel K. created this CC Cream is amazing. The CC Cream blends into your skin after a few minutes of the application. I don't know how to explain it...you just have to see it for yourself. The CC Cream literally disappeared and there is no trace of make-up whatsoever. You could stand 5cm away from my face and you wouldn't be able to tell I have anything on. It looks like moisturizer, but the CC Cream "blurs" your blemishes away. It neutralized the redness on my face and diminished any dark spots. It is pretty amazing! I am extremely impressed with the Rachel K. CC Cream and I'm glad I got my hands on it. It is $39 without shipping and handling. I ordered mine from LisaLisaD1's website, but you can also order it straight from the Rachel K website. Shipping is less expensive if you order it from LisaLisaD1 though.

Noticed the redness is gone and it controlled the shine. I did not put on any concealer and it helped with my dark circles a bit.

Happy Early Valentine's Day

It's that time of the year again where guys scramble last minute to get the perfect gift for their girlfriend, and girls wait anxiously to see what kind of gift their boyfriend got them. I was one of the girls that waited anxiously. I know many people say that Valentine's Day is a Hallmark holiday that pressure couples to spend tons of money on gifts, but I am not looking for fancy gifts. I don't need expensive jewelry or brand name accessories, I just want an appreciative gesture that motivates me to keep doing what I'm doing. For a few days now, my husband and I were deciding where to have dinner for Valentine's Day (V-Day is for both people; not just the girl). We asked our friends for suggestions and a couple of them recommended Shumi in Somerville. Like everyone else, we looked up reviews on Yelp, and Shumi received 4.5 out of 5 starts. We decided Shumi was our Valentine's Day dinner destination!

Shumi is located in a mini strip mall that is dislocated from the main street of Somerville. The door to the restaurant is tiny, almost hidden from the street. There is an Italian restaurant attached to the same building with florescent lights that steals your attention from Shumi. I grew up in the next town over and I've never heard of this sushi restaurant before. When you enter, there is a short hallway before you reach the entrance of Shumi. We reserved our seats at the bar, as recommended by reviewers, and introduced ourselves to our chef, Jack. My husband and Jack hit it off right away because their ancestors were both from Thailand...I patiently listened to their conversation while my stomach growled. I just want to eat! John and I were open to whatever Jack suggested and it was the best choice we made! We started off with 3 appetizers: Monk Fish Liver Sunomono, Oyster Sunomono, and Torro.

How do I begin to describe Monk Fish Liver? It's soft, but firm, almost like firm tofu. The way they steamed the liver brought out its naturally clean and buttery taste. It did not taste fishy at all and it actually reminded me of spam. haha The sauce it came with is light and is a great pairing to the liver. Who would've thought liver could taste so good?!

These oysters were freshly shucked right before they were served to us. The texture was perfect. It was firm and smooth; just the way I like it. The scallions on top brought out the sweetness of the oysters. Yum!

This, this right here is the gem of the restaurant. What appears to be juicy tender beef is actually grilled Blue Fin Tuna cheek! Usually, tuna that is cooked lose its tenderness and juiciness, but this was just the opposite. The meat was full of juice and it melted right in your mouth. You don't even have to chew it; it was like butta! The marinate is a type of Japanese BBQ sauce and it was perfect. This Torro was amazing. I've never had anything like it.

After the appetizers, Jack began our 'Omakase' experience and explained each dish in detail. He also informed us the correct way to eat sushi. Apparently, you are supposed to use your fingers to pick up the sushi and dip the fish side (not the rice side) into the soy sauce. If you want to use chopsticks (like we did), you gently pick up the sushi up from the longer side and not from the top (your chopsticks should be parallel to the sushi, not perpendicular to the sushi). Doing so will prevent the sushi from breaking apart. Also, it is recommended to eat each sushi piece whole to benefit from all the ingredients used for that piece. We started off with a sashimi plate.

(Bottom-right counter clockwise) This sashimi plate includes 6 types of fish. Japanese Mackerel accompanied by scallion and ginger paste, White Albacore Tuna, Blue Fin Tuna, Escolar, Squid Wrap with cucumber and scallion, and Salmon. Jack made a soy sauce dish with garlic and it was delicious! He says that's the house dipping sauce and it is only good with sashimi, not sushi. The garlic sauce gave each fish a different taste. Amazing.

These two pieces are both from the Blue Fin Tuna, but from different parts of the body. What can I say? I love Blue Fin Tuna! (Take that pregnancy that made me miss out on it before!)

I love how Jack paired our sushi each time. This combination is sweet shrimp and squid with secret sauce. The squid had a crunchy texture to it and I love how crunchy it was. Maybe they massaged it like "Jiro Dreams of Sushi"

Look at those thick white strips in the Salmon. This pair is Salmon belly and fluke. I liked how sweet and natural the fluke was!

Spanish Mackerel with scallion and ginger paste, and Aji. The Spanish Mackerel was really flavorful, but a tad bit salty for my palate for some reason. It was still good though.

I was surprised when I saw this. I just stared at it because I wasn't sure what to do with it. Jack called this the "Japanese Shrimp Cracker" as a joke. lol He suggested to eat the whole thing in one bite and it was crunch-hay! It does remind me a lot like shrimp cracker but the taste lasted until I cleansed my palate with the pickled ginger. Don't they look like mini dragons? ;)

The cream color piece is Long Island Scallop and the white piece is another piece of shrimp. The scallop reminded me of the HUGE Clam sushi we had earlier (forgot to take a picture before we devoured it)

Jack asked if we wanted to continue after the last set and we said yes. Ike, the owner and head chef, looked over surprised that we wanted to continue. I guess he assumed that we couldn't eat a lot, but we just kept going! This was when Jack gave us the good stuff.

He didn't explain what this was...but it seems like the orange one is Salmon with Monk Fish Liver and the other is Tuna with Monk Fish Liver. This was a hearty set.

Jack said this is the "Japanese Cigar" haha. Yes, our chef joked a lot and he made our experience memorable. This roll contains Monk Fish Liver with Spanish Mackerel. John was so please with this dish and couldn't stop talking about it on the ride home. The combination was so good!

Oh. My. Gosh. This was the most memorable piece we had all night. This is Uni with quail egg! I swear I tasted happiness when I started to chew this baby up! The egg yolk exploded and covered the Uni; it made a super creamy consistency. No fishy taste with the Uni either! What a special delicacy.

Last but not least, we had the Tomago-roe wrap. This was the perfect ending piece to our dinner. The Tomago was sweet, tender, and fluffy. Just like how it's supposed to be. Amazing. No need for dessert.

Now comes the bill. We knew it was going to be expensive from all the reviews, but the bill came out to more than we expected. The Omakase ala carte alone was $192, so you can picture how much the whole bill came out to. We gave a generous 20% tip because the service was fantastic and very personable. I would recommend anyone who wants to experience an authentic sushi house to try Shumi. It has really high quality service and food. I am still stuffed from dinner and we arrived at 6:45pm. We also stayed there for 2 hours, so we ate quite a bit. Overall, Shumi was definitely a memorable experience and I can't wait to go back again later in the future! This is my kind of Valentine's Day gift! Omakase-omgosh!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Food Galore: Tomato and Potato Soup

As a stay-at-home mom, I cook 3 times a day. I usually make a really simple breakfast, a hearty lunch, and a healthy dinner. I like to whip up quick meals which usually takes me around 30-45 minutes to complete. This is my favorite soup recipe in the whole world! It's my mom's Tomato and Potato Soup. It's quick, easy, healthy, and simply delicious! I didn't have pork neck bone at the time when I made this, but it still taste good. I would recommend making this soup with pork neck bone because it gives more flavor to the soup and you can eat the meat after. I like to use soy sauce to accompany the pork; it brings out the soft and buttery flavor within the meat. Cooking with any kind of pork or beef bone requires a little more work because you have to boil out the "impurities" from the bone. **see instructions.

Fill a medium size pot with water, 1/4 of the pot full (aprox. 5 cups of water)

Cut 2 big tomato (Tiger Tomato) in small wedges

Slice 4 small potato (peeled) in thick slices

Slice 1 onion

After the water boils (visible steam), put tomato, potato, and onion into the pot on medium-high heat with lid on. Once the water boils up again, remove lid and turn heat down to medium-low to cook for 1 hour. Before serving, add salt to taste.

*If you find your pot overflowing, remove excess water and save it for later. The water in the pot will slightly evaporate over time and you can pour the excess water back into the pot to boil.

**Instructions with pork neck bone (1/2 a pound): Fill a pot half way full with water and wait for it to boil. Meanwhile, rinse pork neck bone clean. When the water boils, put pork neck bone into the pot and wait for water to boil again with lid on. Let the water boil for 5 minutes then turn off the heat. Carefully pour out the pork neck bone into a colander. Rinse the pot. Fill the pot again with 1/4 water full. Follow the rest of the instructions.
(When cooking with pork neck bone, use a bigger pot so when you add the rest of the ingredients, it won't overflow)

Enjoy!

The Start of Healthy Habits

I'm starting a habit of spending less time on getting ready

I woke up late again! Usually, I would wake up around 9:15am to feed the girls at 9:30am, but Winter Break has officially messed up my schedule. It also didn't help that I had class today...I gave myself half an hour to cook breakfast for John and me, make the girls' milk, and put on my face. No matter how rushed I feel, I always try to make time to put on my face. I have finally gotten into a routine to put my face on in less than 10 minutes. On days where I am low on time (like today), I focus on the most important features; eyebrows and skin.

For those of you who were born with a full set of brows, lucky you! Some people (like me), have very fine hair that does not even look like it exists! Your eyebrows frame your face and bring everything together. When you have a set of nicely groomed eyebrows, it makes you look awake.

Skin focus is something I always aim to perfect. My skin have post-acne scars and visible pores. I recently found a foundation that helps even out my skin tone and minimize the appearance of my pores.   Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Powder Foundation allows me to even out my skin tone in just 1 minute! It gives my skin a natural finish with a healthy glow. You will notice how much you get can away with when you have nice skin.

One of the best way to rock a red lip is on a casual day. I'm wearing Mac's Mattene Lipstick in Eden Rouge (limited edition)

I'm starting a habit of using a To-Do List

To-Do List for Yesterday
  • Vacuum and wet swiffer the apartment
  • Read Ch. 2 for Principles of Public Policy
  • Find article for policy homework
  • Read Ch. 1 for Biomedical Issues
  • Keep cleaning apartment
  • Read Week 1 for Religion and Work
I've realized that I need to revise and shorten my To-Do List. While I would like to complete several sets of readings in one day, realistically, I cannot do that. I didn't take into account that I cannot do any reading/homework when the girls are awake. This puts me in a disadvantage when it comes to completing items on my To-Do List.

To-Do List for Today
  • Read Ch. 2 for Principles of Public Policy
  • Read Week 1 for Religion and Work
  • Laundry
Errands for Today
  1. Baby R'Us
  2. Barnes and Noble
  3. Michaels
  4. Shop Rite
I'm starting a habit of going to the gym

Last week, I signed up for my 1st membership at the Robert Wood Johnson Fitness & Wellness Center. Since I am paying for it, it motivates me to go to the gym every day. My goal is to run at least two miles a day on top of ab exercises. I am aiming to get back in shape and tone my body by June. Pregnancy has given me two beautiful girls, a kangaroo pouch, and flabby arms! Oh, the joy of pregnancy.

I'm starting a habit of minimizing coffee intake

I love coffee. I used to drink a cup of coffee a day and I'm trying to cut down to one cup of coffee a week. I am also trying to be strict with my water intake because caffeine dehydrates the body.  I won't drink anything else but water on days where I drink coffee. This ensures that I get the adequate amount of water I need to keep my body hydrated.

I order Starbucks Ready Brew Coffee from Amazon. Making my own coffee cuts down on cost. I like to add Starbucks Vanilla Syrup (they sell them at every Starbucks) with a generous amount of International Delight creamer (yes, I like my cream). The taste? Just like a cup of coffee straight from Starbucks! (without the hassle of waiting in line) If you want your coffee on-the-go, then purchase a tumbler (hot or cold) from Starbucks! They have great deals on sale and their products are durable.
